2ES5K Freight Electric Locomotive
 2ES5K AC electric main line locomotive 2ES5K is designed to run freight trains on railways with the 1,520 mm gauge.
Design features
- Traction motors with collectors.
- The electric locomotive consists of two sections. Each section has a set of equipment operated by one operating team that controls the traction and recuperative braking mode operation of one locomotive and, under multiple unit operation conditions, two locomotives (2x2ES5K) or three sections from the head or tail section driver's cab. Provision is made for coupling electric locomotives by any ends, while the trailer section is connected with its butt end part to any end section. There is no passageway between two electric locomotives in multiple unit operation or between the electric locomotive and the trailer section.
- The electric locomotive is equipped with the sanitary equipment (a wash basin, WC, refrigerator).
- The running gear is made with support axial suspension of electric traction motors.
- The circuitry ensures the electric locomotive operation in the mode of traction, electric (recuperative) braking, run-out and parking.
- Smooth four-zone adjustment of the voltage of electric traction motors.
- The control, diagnostic, automatic driving and traffic safety systems.
- The electric locomotive control system allows for the connection of auxiliary systems (devices) via the matched interface and ensures:
- train traffic safety;
- automated electric locomotive control by optimum energy consumption and safety traffic algorithms with due regard to rail track profile, ensuring inter alia active control and advising mode. The traction drive is controlled in the active control mode. In the advising mode the control commands are made by the driver from the control stand;
- control of the traction drive and equipment of the electric locomotive;
- control of auxiliary equipment and units;
- diagnostics of the electric locomotive equipment.
- The control system includes:
- microprocessor control and diagnostic system;
- microprocessor freight train automatic drive system;
- complex locomotive safety ensuring device (KLUB);
- telemetric driver vigilance automatic control system (TSKBM);
- automatic train braking control system (SAUT).
- The microprocessor control and diagnostic system has the control and monitoring subsystem of the equipment and units (KUO) and the subsystem for diagnostics of apparatuses and equipment (DAO).
- Provision is made for installation of two current collectors.
Series to be replaced
The 2ES5K electric locomotive supersedes the VL80 type freight electric locomotives.
New assembly units and systems, and advantages of electric locomotive 2ES5K as compared to the VL80S model:
- Microprocessor control system.
- New safety systems: KLUB-U, SAUT-TsM/485, TSKBM.
- Driver's cab meeting latest requirements.
- New driver's controller.
- Air conditioner.
- No phase splitter.
- Two times reduced number of fans.
- Smooth voltage control on current divider.
- Recuperative braking.
- Fan output control.
